Millions of people are affected by tooth loss; some estimates say that over 100 million people are missing at least one tooth and more than 36 million have no teeth.

Full and partial dentures have long been the go-to treatment for missing teeth, but today we also have dental implants, a tooth replacement option that is most like your natural teeth. Since the implant post is rooted in your jaw, whatever restoration that’s attached – crown, bridge, or dentures – is held securely in place.

Dental Implants and Quality of Life

Knowing you’re one of the millions dealing with tooth loss doesn’t offer much comfort when day in and day out you deal with discomfort, embarrassment, and a generally reduced quality of life. You can’t chew comfortably, so you can’t eat the foods you love, and your nutrition may suffer as a result. Laughing and smiling is out of the question because you don’t want everyone to know your secret.

With problems like this in mind, researchers set out to determine if and how the quality of life improves for actual patients after implant placement. Their results were published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry, and this is what they found:

The study included 79 healthy adults ranging from 39 to 81 years old who had implants. They were all asked to complete a profile to measure their quality of life, and their scores were reported at one, two, and three years post placement. The result was a dramatic improvement for all age groups in their perceived quality of life

What Does This Mean for You?

Dentists who have been using them know that dental implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement because of their oral health benefits. But now, there’s a more compelling reason, and that is the long-term comfort, health, and happiness of their patients.
