Crowns and Bridges in Kalaheo, HI

Close up of dental crowns l Cosmetic dentist Kalaheo HawaiiAt Kalaheo Dental Group in Kalaheo, Hawaii, we promote preventive and general dental care to avoid many oral issues that require restoration or cosmetic enhancing. Even with diligent and meticulous dental hygiene, however, there are times when tooth repair or restoration is necessary.

If you need a little extra dental assistance, your cosmetic dentists in Kalaheo, near Poipu and Koloa, will use the very best in dental technology and materials to provide you with cosmetic dental restoration.

When Is a Dental Crown Necessary in Kalaheo, Hawaii?

We may recommend a crown for a tooth that is injured through accident, illness, or trauma. When a tooth is broken, fractured, or cracked—it may require more repair than a tooth-colored filling can provide. If a cavity is too big, the remaining tooth structure can be weakened and may fracture easily.

Our cosmetic dentists in Kalaheo, Hawaii, can help you retain your natural tooth by using a dental crown to protect and stabilize your natural tooth structure. A tooth crown is a dental cap that covers all the surfaces of your tooth, down to your root. Because the weakened part of your tooth is completely covered, you don't have to worry about stressing any weak points and causing further damage. This means you can continue enjoying your favorite foods, and your speech won't be impaired. Best of all, your dental crown is custom fabricated to blend in with your existing teeth, so no one will ever tell that you have had a dental restoration.

At Kalaheo Dental Group, our cosmetic dentists can use porcelain or ceramic crowns instead of traditional metal-fused dental crowns. Traditional crowns often have the characteristic "gray" line at the gumline. Porcelain dental crowns won't have this tell-tale line, and they are bonded to your tooth with an adhesive that seals your tooth and prevents leakage or bacteria coming in.

Dental crowns can take two dental visits to complete. During the first dental appointment, our cosmetic dentist in Kalaheo, near Poipu and Koloa, will prepare your tooth for the dental crown procedure and fit you with a temporary crown while the permanent dental restoration is fabricated. In a few weeks, you will be scheduled to return to have your dental crown fitted precisely to your tooth. Your dentist will ensure that your bite is aligned and your dental crown is secured.

Frequently Asked Questions

No matter how good we take care of our teeth and gums, sometimes a tooth becomes damaged or weakened. In order to retain your natural existing teeth, your Poipu dentist may recommend a dental crown in order to strengthen and protect them.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a dental prosthetic that covers every surface of your tooth, like a cap. Patients who have a large filling that creates a weak spot in the tooth can use a dental crown to seal the cavity and stabilize the tooth. Dental crowns can also cover badly stained teeth, abnormally shaped teeth, and chipped or cracked teeth.

No matter why patients decide to invest in a dental crown, they all receive the benefit of a newly restored and enhanced smile.

What Does the Dental Crown Procedure Look Like?

Typically, the entire procedure takes two trips to the Kalaheo Dental Group. During your first trip, Dr. Michael Lutwin, Dr. Kelliann Rita, or Dr. Robert Stebbins will be able to determine whether you are a good candidate for a dental crown.

Your dentist will then prepare your tooth and take a digital scan of it so that it can be sent to a special dental lab to fabricate your tooth crown from tooth-colored dental materials. At this time, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown while you wait for your permanent dental crown to be created.

It can take two or more weeks for the dental lab to complete your new dental crown, at which point you can come back to have it placed and bonded. Once your dentist is happy that it fits snugly and comfortably during smiling, talking, biting down, and chewing, they will adhere the crown to your tooth permanently.

Using a Dental Crown to Improve Your Appearance

Many of our Poipu, HI patients look to tooth crowns to enhance the following:

  • Cover yellow and severely stained teeth
  • Restore an obviously damaged tooth
  • Fix an oddly shaped tooth
  • Elongate stubby teeth

Dental Crowns | Kalaheo Dental Group | Kalaheo, HIStrengthen and Protect Your Teeth

Dental crowns at Kalaheo Dental Group are a prosthetic that we use on a tooth that has been weakened by decay. If we don’t protect the tooth, the damage will get worse and lead to discomfort and possible loss of the tooth.

A crown is designed like a little helmet that holds the tooth together and redistributes the stress evenly throughout its structure. After your crown is placed, it restores strength, appearance, and your ability to chew and eat comfortably.

There are several reasons why we may recommend a crown:

  • Strengthen and protect cracked, broken, or worn teeth
  • Improve the appearance of misshapen or poorly proportioned teeth
  • Protect tooth structure after root canal treatment
  • Restore a tooth that already has a large filling

Placing a Crown

Placing a crown is a straightforward process that takes place over two or three visits. First, we prepare the tooth, then take impressions that we use to create a model. The model is used to design your new crown and create a temporary to wear while your restoration is fabricated at a custom lab. When your crown is ready, you will return to our office to have the temporary removed, and the final crown checked for fit and comfort and cemented in place.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is recommended for patients who are missing one or more adjacent teeth. Dental bridges are dental prosthetics that use your neighboring teeth as support anchors for prosthetic teeth. Your Kalaheo dentist will be able to match the shade of your dental bridge to your natural teeth so that it complements your smile.

If you are interested in permanent tooth replacements, we may recommend dental implants to help restore a missing tooth or to secure a dental bridge. Dental implants usually protect the integrity of your smile and offer a life-long solution to missing teeth and maintaining good oral health.

Caring for Your Dental Crown and BridgeBright smile close up l Dental Crowns at Kalaheo Dental Group

With proper care, our Kalaheo patients can expect to enjoy their crown or dental bridge for many years.

Maintenance for dental crowns is no different than caring for your existing teeth—brushing and flossing daily, regular dental check-ups, and dental exams are all vital for ensuring that your dental restorations remain beautiful and healthy.

Dental bridges may require a little more diligence since it's important to clean any food debris or particles that may get under them. Interproximal brushes are often used to help clean, they resemble toothpicks with a brush at one end. Without cleaning the food debris that can get caught, it can lead to tooth decay or infection.

Our Kalaeho dental team will provide patients with good after-care instructions on how to maintain and care for your dental restorations.

Want to Learn More about Your Dental Options?

Excellent cosmetic dentistry is not a one-size-fits-all service. There may be more than one procedure that could benefit your oral health and smile. Our Kalaeho dentists will go over all the options you have available to you and give you all the information you need to make an informed decision.

If you have injured your tooth, please do not wait to call us. The longer you wait, the more extensive the damage can be! Contact the experienced dental team at Kalaheo Dental Group for dental assistance.
