You Should Know These Facts about Dental Implants

Dental Implants Kalaheo HI

Dental implants have been in practical use for decades and have restored the smiles of millions of people. However, in a recent study conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), researchers found that 25% of the patients surveyed never even heard of dental implants!

Implant Facts You Should Know

Considering the tremendous benefit they offer compared to other tooth replacements, we believe that everyone should at least have a basic understanding of implants. They are the preferred method for replacing teeth, so at some point, you may consider an implant for yourself. Here are a few things you need to know before you do:

  • Implants are made of titanium – Half of those surveyed said that implants are made of porcelain or ceramic. But the implant is actually made of titanium, a biocompatible material that integrates with surrounding bone and tissue. The implant forms a permanent, secure bond and is a stable base for a dental restoration.
  • Implants consist of three pieces – Dental implants are an ingenious dental prosthetic! They are composed of three separate pieces that join together to form a functioning tooth. First, the implant post is inserted into your jaw. Next, an attachment piece called an abutment is screwed into the implant. Finally, a restoration like a crown or a denture is attached to the abutment.
  • Implants are permanent – Since the implant integrates with tissue in your jaw, it becomes a permanent part of your dental anatomy. As long as you follow good oral health practices and visit your dentist twice a year, you can expect your implant to last forever. At some point, however, the visible restoration may need to be replaced.
